CANADA is expected to tighten international travel restrictions with new measures, in a bid to limit the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, according to CBC News. The policy will be announced on Wednesday (12/15).
Measures that the Canadian government may take, including a ban on entry to Canada for all foreign arrivals, including those from the United States, who do not belong to an essential group. The measures were discussed in a telephone conversation between Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and provincial leaders in Canada, but no decision has yet been reached.
A number of possible restrictive measures could include stricter quarantine and testing for travelers allowed into Canada, including Canadian citizens and permanent residents returning home.
Canada has announced a ban on entry for people who have recently traveled to 10 countries in Africa. The Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which health officials say is more contagious than the Delta variant, has begun to spread among communities in Canada since it was first detected in November 2021.
CBC News reports that there is broad agreement between Trudeau and leaders from Canada’s 10 provinces on the need to dramatically increase the speed at which booster or third-dose vaccines are administered. [antaranews/photo special]
