THE NEXT generation Boxster and Cayman will reportedly only be available as EVs. Porsche found much success with the 718 Boxster and Cayman models. Yes, both of these models are considered more affordable for Porsche sports car ownership, some even prefer them over the iconic 911.
However, four generations since the original, Porsche plans to radically change the formula of both models and convert them into EVs, both of which will debut in the middle of this decade. The manufacturer hasn’t shown any official teasers yet, but after the spy photos and speculative renderings we’ve seen, we have a pretty good idea what the model will look like.
And in true Porsche tradition, it probably won’t look much different from the existing internal combustion engine model, and should be very similar to this new rendering provided by our colleagues at Motor1 Italia.
If you didn’t know that the vehicle, they were describing was an electric vehicle, you wouldn’t really be able to tell. The front has an opening wide enough to allow air in (this is consistent with what we’ve seen in spy shots), making it look like a typical ICE vehicle, not an EV, although these may all be active and only open when the vehicle needs it. cooling.
The vehicle in the rendering also has intakes in front of the rear wheels. This is a trademark of the Boxster, but is no longer required to circulate air to the mid-mounted boxer engine.
Instead, they would supply cold air to cool brakes or electrical components and they (like the massive front bumper intakes) would likely be kept to keep the design recognizable and familiar.
The headlights will be less rounded, more angular for the 2025 model. The headlights will be more Taycan-like and are expected to feature the same four-dot LED daytime running light signature.
For the rear, if Porsche follows the same design philosophy as it has for most of its current models, then the electric Boxster will have a full-width light bar connecting the taillights – this is not shown in the renderings nor is it very clear in the eye photos – eye.
Underpinning the electric Boxster (as well as the Cayman hardtop) will be a version of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) which will also be used as the basis for the upcoming Macan EV.
However, we wish sports cars built on this platform prioritized a low seating position (less important in a crossover or SUV), so they might have special battery packs that would not just be mounted as low as possible, that would either surround the seat or sit completely in behind them.
And in terms of power, the new electric Boxster and Cayman will have a lot more than the current ICE models. Porsche did show the 1,073-horsepower Mission R Concept as a technical preview for the production model, but we didn’t really expect them to be that powerful – there will probably be a dedicated version with output close to that, especially since we’ve also heard rumors that Porsche is working on a Taycan variant with that much power.
