GOVERNMENT OPTISMISTIC OF ACHIEVING TOURIST MOBILITY TARGET OF 1.4 BILLION

TOURISM and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno expressed his optimism that the domestic tourist mobility target of 1.4 billion in 2023 can be met despite high airfares and global economic conditions.

The global economy affects the tourism sector, with the main complaint being the rising airline ticket prices during the post-COVID-19 pandemic period. However, Indonesia can still grow, he stated here on Friday (March 3).

According to Uno, Indonesia’s improving conditions became one of the indicators that the mobility of domestic tourists will help the economy and facilitate economic recovery gradually. The ministry recorded that domestic tourist mobility in 2022 was at 703 million. Meanwhile, the target is 1.4 billion in 2023. This translates to the fact that the target for this year is two folds higher than the realization in 2022.

Meanwhile, during a public lecture held in a hybrid format, the minister outlined several strategies in developing the tourism and creative economy sector. The first strategy involves optimizing institutions by increasing certification.

The second concerns improving the competency of human resources in the tourism and creative economy sector. The third relates to strengthening the tourism and creative economy community as well as institutions.

The fourth strategy is upscaling and news calling strategy in supporting development of the tourism and creative economy sector in Indonesia.

Development of the tourism sector necessitates collaboration among all parties, including in handling the current global economic conditions and high airfare, he remarked.

“We already coordinate with the Lion Air Airline and urged airlines to operate a route in several tourism destinations,” he added.

On the occasion, Uno also echoed his ministry’s optimism on being able to create 4.4 million new jobs in the tourism and creative economy sector. [antaranews/photo special]
