The ‘Istana Berbatik’ or Berbatik Palace event is a moment to promote and showcase batik as an original product and creative work of Indonesian cultural heritage to the world stage. The event was held to commemorate National Batik Day which falls on October 2 2023.
According to the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Angela Tanoesoedibjo, in her statement in Jakarta, Friday (9/29), 2023, said that the main event of the event which will be held on Sunday (10/01), 2023 will feature a fashion show involving around 500 participants. consisting of state officials, top officials of ministries/institutions and State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), public figures, representatives of archipelago kingdoms, and ambassadors from friendly countries.
“We are optimistic that this Istana Berbatik event is not just a ceremonial event to commemorate National Batik Day which falls on October 2. But that message will further show that Indonesia is rich in cultural heritage,” said Angela.
With the involvement of ambassadors from friendly countries as models and the broadcast of this event in national media, the Berbatik Palace can be the right means to promote batik in the international market. Apart from that, the “Berbatik Palace” is also an important moment to further confirm batik as a cultural heritage from Indonesia, as UNESCO has recognized batik as an intangible cultural heritage since October 2 2009.
“It is hoped that the existence of the Batik Palace is proof of the government’s support for batik craftsmen, especially creative economy Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This event is also a promotional event to the world to increase batik consumption both at home and abroad,” she said.
“We designed this (event) with the message that batik is Indonesia’s timeless cultural heritage, continuing to be relevant from time to time with the support of the Indonesian people who always wear batik and promote it to the international market,” said Angela.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Ministry of BUMN, Rabin Indrajad Hattari emphasized his ministry’s commitment to supporting the progress and development of national culture as well as MSME players. Apart from that, he is committed to becoming more involved in empowering batik MSMEs to improve the image and brand of Indonesian batik so that it becomes more global, for example through financing and promotional support, expanding marketing access, and so on.
