THE MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy stated that the value of income from the gaming industry or game applications developing in Indonesia will reach IDR25 trillion during 2022, which is considered to have the opportunity to grow the domestic economy.
“The national gaming market will be IDR25 trillion in 2022,” said Director of Games, Television and Radio Applications at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy Iman Santosa during the Netas program for Improving Human Resource Quality in the Gaming Sub Sector in Cipanas, Garut Regency, West Java, Saturday (10/14), 2023.
He said that the gaming industry in Indonesia is quite profitable with revenue figures reaching IDR 25 trillion in money spent by game players. However, 99.5% of revenue from the gaming industry flows abroad, which has been the provider of gaming applications, while income for domestic gaming industry players is recorded at only 0.5%.
The potential for domestic online game users is quite high, he said, so the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is trying to take advantage of this potential by encouraging creative game industry players to make more games in order to attract this income.
“How to socialize this game to develop the local games industry, so that it can enter the market, expand national games, because the industry is very large,” he said.
He conveyed that in an effort to exploit the potential of the creative gaming industry, the government is currently making a Presidential Regulation on the Acceleration of Development of the National Games Industry which is expected to be implemented in 2024.
The existence of this Presidential Decree, he said, is because it has economic value which can contribute foreign exchange to improve the national economy, in turn raising local cultural values which need to be published more widely.
“We want to take it to the top, spread the word that games have positive values, not just negative but positive, there are educational games, health games,” he said.
He explained that the existence of this Presidential Decree could encourage the emergence of creative game industry players who would later be able to gain potential income greater than IDR 25 trillion.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, he said, is targeting to reach 70% of the gaming industry’s revenue at the national level by 2024, so that in the future it will no longer only get 0.5%.
“We are making a Presidential Regulation on how to develop the national gaming industry, which was previously 0.5%, by 2024 it could increase by 70%, in one year it could at least increase, not just 0.5%,” he said.
He added that efforts to support the creative games industry program require collaboration with stakeholders, one of which is the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy involving the Ministry of Investment to develop the games industry.
The games industry, he said, currently earns more than the music and film industries, even though both combined are still below the games industry. “This is potential that must be developed,” he concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
