THE CENTRAL Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that throughout 2022 there will be 3.54 million national tourists traveling abroad. BPS defines “national tourists” as Indonesian residents who go abroad for no more than 1 year, for holiday, business or other purposes, but not to be employed by people/companies in the country visited.
Of all national tourists traveling abroad in 2022, the majority or 19.21% visited Saudi Arabia. According to BPS, Saudi Arabia is the main destination country for national tourists, especially for religious purposes.
In 2022, the average Indonesian who goes to Saudi Arabia spends there around 14 days. Other countries visited by many national tourists are Malaysia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Turkey, Japan, Timor Leste, United States and Vietnam, with proportions as shown in the graph.
If grouped by region, throughout 2022 around 47.5% of national tourists will visit neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. BPS assesses those Southeast Asian countries are favorite destinations for Indonesian tourists because they are close and travel costs are cheap. [sources/photo special]
