THE GAMING industry has the potential to be a driver of national economic growth. Of course, we need to see the contribution of this gaming industry, which we believe is one of the industries that we can encourage to help the country achieve an economy towards 8% growth.
According to the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid in her statement in Jakarta, Friday (05/16) said, I emphasize the importance of the government to understand the needs of game industry players in order to design targeted policies, through direct dialogue with industry players.
“As a step to strengthen the domestic game industry, the Innovation Hub Program will be launched in three major cities, namely Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya. The program aims to support the establishment of new studios and talent training. In addition, the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) event, which will be held on October 9-11, 2025 in Bali, is being prepared as the culmination of the consolidation of the national game industry,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Ministry’s Digital Ecosystem, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, added that “we actually have a cooperation program, we call it the Innovation Hub, which encourages new companies to develop game companies and also talent development.
Likewise, the chairman of the Indonesian Game Association (AGI), Shafiq Husein, revealed that the current valuation of the global game market has reached US$187 billion, or twice that of the film and music industries combined.
“Indonesia itself recorded a market value of IDR 30 trillion, the highest in Southeast Asia and ranked 15th in the world. However, only 2.5% of the national market value is enjoyed by local developers. Currently, local game development revenue is only IDR 750 billion per year, or only 2.5 percent of the Indonesian market itself. This means that 97.5 percent goes to foreign games,” said Shafiq.
In addition, the local industry is also hampered in accessing initial funding to compete with foreign products in their own market.
According to Shafiq, one of the important moments that game industry players are looking forward to is IGDX, which will be held in Bali in October, as the international event will be attended by major players in the global game industry.
“IGDX has entered the global calendar. Even Sony PlayStation will be at IGDX Bali for the first time this year. Steam is also making its first appearance in Indonesia at IGDX. This year’s theme is PlayStation,” Shafiq concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
