ASEAN’s 58th ANNIVERSARY, INDONESIAN TOURISTS ENJOY VISA-FREE VISITS FOR 30 DAYS

IN CELEBRATION of the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Indonesian government has announced a new policy that will allow its citizens to visit ASEAN countries for up to 30 days without the need for a visa.

Indonesian tourists are eligible for visa-free travel to Southeast Asian countries. The visa-free policy for Indonesian citizens visiting ASEAN countries has been in effect for some time, subject to several conditions. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) currently comprises 10 official members.

The ten ASEAN member countries that can apply for an ASEAN visa are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

According to the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Visa Exemption, ASEAN member countries are obligated to exempt citizens of other member countries from visa requirements, provided that they are in possession of a valid national passport.

The visa-free stay for visits to ASEAN countries is 14 days, starting from the date of entry. However, the maximum visit duration for these 10 ASEAN countries is currently set at 30 days.

Indonesian travelers are required to have an official passport with a minimum validity of six months, starting from the date of arrival in the destination country. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) commemorated its 58th anniversary on August 8, 1967, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration in Thailand.

This year’s ASEAN anniversary theme is “Towards an Inclusive & Sustainable ASEAN Future.” The celebrations will be held in two cities: The cities of Jakarta, Indonesia, and Osaka, Japan.

According to antaranews.com, by the end of 2025, ASEAN will have one official member, Timor Leste. In addition to the accession of new member countries, all ASEAN member countries, along with Timor Leste, have previously received ASEAN visas from China.

The ASEAN visa is a multiple-entry visa that is valid for five years. As reported by kompas.com on Friday, June 6, 2025, the ASEAN visa allows citizens of Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries to visit and stay in China for a maximum of 180 days, or six months.

At a recent press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian announced the launch of an “ASEAN visa” program for 10 ASEAN member states and observer Timor-Leste. The new program offers five-year, multi-entry visas for qualified applicants visiting China for business purposes. [kompas.com/photo special]
