INDONESIA’S State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir said that service to local tourists must be the main priority, because there is a lot of local tourism potential that must be developed.
“I hope we can all agree on this consistency. We have to ensure that local tourist services come first, infrastructure for local tourists is the main thing,” said Erick Thohir in Jakarta, recently.
According to the Minister Erick Thohir, this is because there are a lot of local tourism potentials that must be developed in cities, districts, and villages.
“The United States and China are building local tourism, building local infrastructure, and that’s what I believe, why later flights in Indonesia, whether Garuda or Citilink or others, we want to focus on local and domestic because our market is very large,” he said.
Erick added that now is the era of competition, so Indonesia must ensure that its domestic market is very strong, lest this domestic market is not taken, and even foreigners take it.
Previously, Erick Thohir said that Garuda Indonesia would focus on the domestic flight business by serving inter-island community trips in the country. Indonesia is an archipelagic country, so it is impossible for Indonesians to go to other islands by train, they have two choices, namely by ship or by flight. Garuda and Citilink will focus on the domestic market, not the international market.
Erick Thohir referred to the Garuda Indonesia database, which was dominated by 78% of passengers to regional destinations with revenues reaching IDR1,400 trillion. Meanwhile, the number of passengers destined for overseas was only 22% with the acquisition of IDR300 trillion.
“Talks regarding the change of Garuda Indonesia’s business to the domestic market have been carried out from November 2019 to January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic,” he concluded. [antaranews]
