PT GARUDA Indonesia Tbk. conveyed the rules for carrying smart luggage or battery-powered suitcases on flights that are permitted in the cabin.
Garuda Indonesia President Director, Irfan Setiaputra explained that the policy refers to aviation safety rules which are determined based on the size, maximum weight and capacity of lithium batteries as well as other specifications of cabin baggage as stated in the policies of The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and related domestic regulations.
In accordance with this policy, the standard baggage that is allowed to board the cabin, including smart suitcases, is baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kilograms, the largest dimensions are 56 x 36 x 23 cm (linear 115 cm), and a battery capacity of no more than 100 Wh.
“Furthermore, the condition of the batteries in smart suitcases that are allowed to be carried on planes are those that have removable battery specifications,” he explained in an official statement recently.
Furthermore, if the smart suitcase has a weight and/or dimensions and/or battery capacity that exceeds these standards, the baggage is not permitted to be boarded in the cabin. Meanwhile, smart suitcases that have a battery capacity exceeding 100 Wh but less than 160 Wh can be transported as checked baggage with the requirement to obtain approval from the airline.
“Smart suitcases that have a lithium battery capacity exceeding 160 Wh are not permitted to be transported either as cabin baggage or checked baggage,” he emphasized.
Regarding these requirements, the company continues to review procedural steps that can be maximized to ensure safety management regarding the use of smart passenger suitcases is in line with applicable aviation safety provisions, including the screening process in the pre-flight process.
In its implementation, the company will make educational efforts for passengers. This includes ensuring that aspects of supervision for passengers can run optimally, supported by airport service stakeholders.
“We are implementing this provision as a continuous step in maintaining the core values of Garuda Indonesia services, namely the priority of security, safety and flight comfort for both passengers and flight crew,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Irfan Setiaputra also appealed to passengers to report the use of smart suitcases when carrying out pre-flight procedures to ensure that the provisions of aviation safety regulations can be maintained in line with the commitment to prioritize the interests of passenger safety and comfort during the flight.
