JAPAN, through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), at the Air Transportation Working Group (ATWG) event on 18-20 January 2024 in Bandung expressed the interest of several Japanese companies in building and operating airports in Indonesia. Specifically, Sultan Aji Muhammad Sepinggan Airport, Balikpapan.

According to the Director of Airports at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation, Lukman F Laisa, Japan introduced four companies, namely Japan Airport Terminal, JALUX Inc, Taisei, and SECOM.

“So, the four companies expressed their interest and desire to collaborate in developing airports in Indonesia, especially in Balikpapan to improve the function of Sultan Aji Muhammad Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan as the entrance to the capital of the archipelago,” said Lukman in his written statement Saturday (01/20), 2024.

He said that the four companies had experience in building and operating major airports in Japan. Some of them include Haneda Airport and Narita Airport as well as several airports outside Japan such as Beijing International Airport in China and New Ulaanbaater Airport in Mongolia.

“Japan’s experience in terms of technology and expertise is very extensive, especially in the development and operation of airports in Japan and abroad. It is hoped that this will help develop the aviation industry in Indonesia,” he remarked.

Lukman added that apart from that, also discussed were Indonesia’s proposal to improve routes to Japan and an explanation regarding the Indonesia State Safety Program. Apart from that, there was also a presentation on developments in the use of alternative fuels for Sustainable Aviation Fuel or bioavtur flights in Indonesia.

“This activity is very useful as a forum for discussion and exchange of experiences between the two countries. The hope is that apart from being able to develop the world of aviation in both countries, it can also improve good relations between Indonesia and Japan,” concluded Lukman. [sources/photo special]
