PLN READY TO IMPLEMENT CCS TO SUPPORT DECABONIZATION OF POWER SECTOR

PT PLN (State Electricity Company) is ready to implement carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology as one of the key pillars of decarbonization in the power sector. The effort is intended to support the government in achieving the goal of zero carbon emissions (NZE) by 2060 or earlier.

“PLN is playing an important role in Indonesia’s energy transition to clean energy. We have a comprehensive energy transition roadmap and are committed to implementing the roadmap to achieve NZE by 2060,” PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said in his statement in Jakarta on Sunday (09/4), 2024.

Darmawan said that PLN, as a pioneer in the implementation of CCS technology in the power sector in Indonesia, has collaborated with various international partners in CCS technology development studies at five power plants.

“The challenges in implementing the energy transition are enormous, so strong cooperation among the global community is needed. We have collaborated with various international partners to conduct CCS implementation studies at our four PLTUs and one PLTGU,” he said.

He also explained that currently 37.6 gigawatts (GW) of power plants meet the requirements for CCS implementation and 19 GW are technically feasible and prioritized for CCS implementation. CCS will play an important role in the decarbonization of the power generation sector. In this case, PLN is preparing to implement CCS for a total capacity of 2 GW in 2040 and 19 GW in 2060.

Meanwhile, PLN’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of Electricity System Planning Warsono said to achieve this, PLN is working with partners such as JERA and JGC, INPEX and Karbon Korea on CCS implementation studies at PLN’s PLTUs and PLTGUs. The power plants that are pilot projects for CCS implementation include Suralaya PLTU Unit 1-4, Suralaya PLTU Unit 5-7, Indramayu PLTU, Tambak Lorok PLTGU and Tanjung Jati B PLTU.

“Collaboration between stakeholders is very important for the future implementation of CCS. For the pilot plan, we have conducted a study with various stakeholders related to the implementation of CCS,” Warsono said.

More over Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 14 of 2024 on the Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage Activities has shown the government’s commitment and seriousness to implement CCS technology as part of the decarbonization initiative.

“The Indonesian government wants to move quickly in implementing this carbon capture and storage technology. We are aware of the importance of the maturity of CCS technology, so we will continue to do many things to achieve this goal,” Luhut said at the International & Indonesia CCS (IICCS) Forum 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Wednesday (07/31), 2024.

The implementation, Luhut said, is not only important in efforts to massively reduce carbon emissions, more than that, Luhut wants Indonesia to become a pioneer of CCS so that it can create a circular economy by creating new jobs.

“The CCS initiative is driven by Indonesia and neighboring countries to reduce emissions and protect the earth. More than that, Indonesia wants to become a pioneer of cross-border CCS, turning investment into income, jobs and innovation, and creating prosperity and sustainability,” Luhut concluded. [antaranews]
