THE DUMAI Municipality continues its efforts to revitalize Pinang Kampai Airport so that it can resume operations.
To this end, the Deputy Mayor of Dumai, Sugiyarto, together with the Regional Secretary of Dumai City, Indra Gunawan, held a meeting with Pertamina and Pelita Air and inspected the condition of the airport located on Jalan Soekarno Hatta.
“The initial target, God willing, Pinang Kampai Airport will resume operations in May 2025. The airline that will be used is Pelita Air with ATR aircraft,” he said, Monday (03/17), 2025.
He said the main discussion of this meeting included cooperation on land use for airport expansion, runway extension and plans to reactivate Pinang Kampai Airport operations.
From this review, the Deputy Mayor and related parties reviewed the existing condition of the runway and discussed the need for supporting infrastructure so that the airport can resume operations soon.
The Dumai Municipal Government will continue to coordinate with the Dumai Mayor and related stakeholders for the resumption of airport operations, including planning documents, funding, and airport operations management.
“Please pray for the entire community, hopefully the Dumai-Jakarta, Dumai-Medan, Dumai-Batam and Dumai-Padang flights will be realized soon for the sake of easy transportation access for the people of Dumai,” he added.
Meanwhile, the head of Dumai City Land and Spatial Planning Agency (Pertaru), Muhammad Mufarizal, said the meeting also discussed the plan to extend the runway of Pinang Kampai Airport to 2,400 meters.
“Currently, the runway is still 1,800 meters long. We need an additional 600 meters of land to accommodate the increased use of Pinang Kampai Airport. In addition, the runway will be widened from 30 meters to 45 meters and other supporting facilities will be prepared,” Mufarizal explained.
To support the runway extension and infrastructure development, the Dumai city government will coordinate with Pertamina Pusat, PT KPI RU II Kilang Dumai and Pelita Air.
“If the runway is extended and widened, Pinang Kampai Airport will be able to accommodate large aircraft such as Airbus and Boeing in the future,” he said.
He hoped that the plan would be smoothly implemented to improve regional connectivity and have a positive impact on the local economy, business sector and tourism in Dumai City. [sources/photo special]
