CULTURE-BASED TOURISM CAN BE STRENGTHENED THROUGH HISTORICAL AREAS

MINISTER of Culture Fadli Zon stated that the development of cultural tourism is a key focus that needs to be strengthened, including the management of historical areas such as palaces and palaces scattered throughout Indonesia.

“We are working upstream, midstream, and downstream. Tourism should flow through us. Therefore, we want to improve various cultural potentials, including palaces and palaces throughout Indonesia,” he said in an official statement confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday (04/14), 2026.

Fadli Zon reiterated the importance of Intellectual Property (IP), conveying this during a meeting with Sapta Nirwandar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy for the 2011-2014 period.

He stated that utilizing IP in the management and commercialization of cultural heritage is also a strategic step that can be implemented in Indonesia, while still maintaining authenticity and ethical preservation.

Indonesia’s cultural richness offers significant opportunities for the development of derivative products, such as high-quality souvenirs with strong artistic and economic value.

“If we can develop high-quality cultural derivative products, these won’t just be ordinary souvenirs, but professionally reproduced with the involvement of local artisans, thereby adding economic value while expanding public access to cultural heritage,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Sapta Nirwandar proposed collaborating with various countries to organize international cultural activities that prioritize cultural similarities, such as bamboo-based crafts.

“Besides being part of nature and cultural preservation, bamboo also has great potential as a raw material for the creative industry. Various innovative products have been produced in various countries, from musical instruments and furniture to functional products like bicycles and other bamboo-based instruments,” he said.

The meeting also discussed the development of tourism and the creative economy based on religion and culture, such as the utilization of Borobudur and Prambanan Temples.

The discussion also addressed the use of cultural spaces for sports-based tourism, such as the Tour de Singkarak and the Borobudur Marathon.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue intensive discussions and coordination to find the right formula for developing the tourism industry and the culture-based creative economy. It is hoped that the future development of this industry will have a positive economic impact on Indonesia. [antaranews]
