THE MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy stated that the implementation of the 2nd UN Tourism Conference on Women Empowerment in Tourism in Asia-Pacific in Bali on May 2-4, 2024, will be a momentum to strengthen the role of women and gender equality in the tourism and creative economy sector (parekraf).
According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno in ‘The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno’, at Sapta Pesona Building, Central Jakarta, Monday (04/22), 2024, said gender equality is an important issue that needs to be prioritized in various sectors, including the tourism sector and creative economy. The 54.22% of workers in the tourism and creative economy (parekraf) in Indonesia are women, and they still face striking disparities, especially in terms of salaries and compensation.
“We need to give women equal opportunities. Not only as participants, but also as leaders. This meeting would present officials and female personalities who play an important role in promoting the tourism industry in Indonesia and the world as speakers. Apart from that, 200 delegates from different countries also attended this meeting,” Sandiaga said.
On the same occasion, Sesmenparekraf/Sestama Baparekraf, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani added that this meeting was held as an effort to fulfill one of the pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is gender equality or gender mainstreaming.
“Holding this conference in Indonesia also shows that Indonesia, as a member of UN Tourism, is playing an active role in the Asia-Pacific region. Because this is a regional conference in the Asia-Pacific region with 22 member countries and there are also several international speakers invited from outside the Asia-Pacific region. Pacific region,” Mrs. Giri remarked.
Likewise, the Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy HR Center, Tourism Ministry, Andar Danova L. Goeltom, said that the involvement of women in the tourism and creative sector plays an important role, especially in terms of innovation and creativity. In this way, the economy can also benefit through better use of available talent, which ultimately increases productivity and the likelihood in the tourism sector.
