THE GOVERNMENT of Sarawak, Malaysia, is preparing to open a direct flight route to the Indonesian capital (IKN). This route will be operated by Air Borneo, a new airline which is targeted to launch in January 2026.
This initiative is expected to strengthen the aviation network on the island of Borneo and support plans to operate Nusantara International Airport as a commercial airport. The Sarawak government assesses that the new connectivity can open up economic opportunities and strengthen relations between regions in Borneo.
“We are on the same island in Borneo. We are very interested in the development of the archipelago, this is the future. Fellow people in Borneo, we are proud that in the future the whole world will come to the archipelago,” said Sarawak Transport Minister, YB Dato Sri Lee Kim in a written statement from the IKN Authority, Thursday (12/11), 2025.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the IKN Authority, Bimo Adi Nursanthyasto, said that increasing connectivity is an important need for IKN. According to him, the operation of Nusantara International Airport will facilitate mobility to and from the area.
“Soon Nusantara Airport will operate as a commercial airport. This will facilitate mobility to and from IKN,” concluded Bimo. [sources/photo special]
