THE New Zealand government is investing NZD5 million (approximately IDR51.8 billion) to fund six initiatives aimed at attracting more international tourists to various regions, with a specific focus on travelers from China.
This regional tourism funding includes NZD994,902 (approximately IDR10.3 billion) for the “Kiwi North” culinary and hospitality campaign, designed to draw more Chinese tourists to Rotorua on the North Island.
Another NZD994,902 has been allocated for a campaign to attract Chinese tourists to Christchurch and the South Island, according to a government statement released on Monday (9/07), 2026.
The funding will support collaborative regional campaigns designed to encourage international tourists to travel, stay, and dine during the spring of 2026 and early summer of 2027—periods leading up to the peak tourism season—said New Zealand Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston in the statement.
“These campaigns will encourage tourists from Australia, North America, and China to stay longer, travel further, and support local tourism and hospitality businesses,” Upston said, as quoted in the statement.
The government aims to attract more tourists during quieter months and encourage them to travel beyond New Zealand’s main gateways to explore the country’s various regions, Upston added.
The six campaigns will showcase regional food, wine, hospitality, and visitor experiences, while helping to spread the benefits of tourism growth to more communities across New Zealand, the statement noted. [antaranews]
