KOREAN AIR CONFIRMS PURCHASE OF 50 BOEING WORTH US$32 BILLION

THE UNITED States Department of Commerce said on Monday, March 24, 2025 that Korean Air has signed a contract to purchase up to 50 Boeing aircraft.

“Recently, United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick conducted a signing ceremony for a major commercial agreement between Korean Air and leaders of American aerospace companies Boeing and GE Aerospace worth approximately US$32 billion,” the department said.

The agreement includes Korean Air’s purchase of up to 50 wide-body Boeing aircraft powered by GE Aerospace engines. Howard Lutnick said he and Trump are ushering in a new era for American manufacturing.

“Today’s announcement clearly demonstrates the global recognition of American manufacturing and innovation,” he was quoted as saying on the U.S. Department of Commerce website. “The Department of Commerce remains committed to supporting these efforts, which will drive our nation’s economic resurgence.”

As quoted by Barrons, Howard Lutnick said that his department would support efforts that would spur the country’s revival. The announcement comes as the Trump administration has imposed tariffs on imports from a number of countries and sectors.

While it intends to impose more levies, some of which are aimed at boosting domestic industry, the Seoul-based airline expects the first delivery from the deal to take place in July 2024.

Korean Air executives cited delivery delays as one of the challenges facing the airline as it seeks to merge with sister carrier Asiana Airlines, according to Flight Global. To mitigate the delays, the airline needs to keep its older aircraft, including Airbus A380s and 747-8s, flying longer.

The aircraft commitment was confirmed on the sidelines of a visit by Korean Air executives and South Korean lawmakers to the United States. Korean Air will also finalize its contract for eight spare GE9X engines, with an option for two more, and an engine maintenance and overhaul agreement with GE Aerospace. The GE9X engines will power the airline’s 777-9 aircraft. [antaranews/photo special]
