PRESIDENT JOKOWI: TOURISM MUST BE MORE RESILIENT AND PEOPLE’S WELFARE

PRESIDENT Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called on all tourism stakeholders to think together how the sector can be more resilient and the people’s welfare even more. President Jokowi made the call at the peak of the 42nd World Tourism Day commemoration in Bali, Tuesday (9/27).

“We have to rethink how the tourism sector can become more resilient and improve the welfare of the community,” the President said in a virtual speech on the official YouTube channel of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

According to the President, the COVID-19 pandemic situation is gradually easing and this is felt by Indonesia, among others, through the surge in the number of international tourist arrivals, which at the beginning of this year had doubled compared to the same period in 2021.

The President said that similar patterns also occur in other parts of the world, which indicates that human connectivity is starting to show a resurgence.

However, Jokowi emphasized that there are still many global challenges faced by the tourism sector. “Sharp inflation in various countries, expensive transportation fuel, unresolved geopolitical conflicts, and climate change are increasingly affecting all lines of people’s lives. All these challenges must be faced with creativity, innovation, and global cooperation,” he said.

Therefore, the President stated that the tourism sector must continue to be oriented towards inclusive and sustainable world economic growth.

The tourism sector, continued the President, must also be environmentally friendly, sustainably preserve local cultures, and involve the active role of local communities.

To create a tourism sector that is more resilient and the people’s welfare more prosperous, Jokowi stressed that all stakeholders must prioritize the rise of quality and sustainable tourism.

“Redesigning the revival of the tourism sector requires hard work from all parties. All stakeholders must start looking for ways to mitigate the changes caused by the rapid development of the world and make the future tourism sector more prepared, more resilient, and of higher quality,” he stated.

The President also appreciated the trust given by UNWTO to Indonesia to host the peak of the 42nd World Tourism Day celebration.

Jokowi also did not forget to invite world tourism organizations to collaborate and invite investors to build inclusive, quality and sustainable tourism in Indonesia. [antaranews]
