IN THE DIGITAL ERA, DON’T FORGET ABOUT DIRECT SOCIAL INTERACTIONS: DOCTOR

EVERYTHING has become more practical and easier thanks to digital advances, including communication that can be done via social media or instant messaging applications.

According to a psychiatrist, dr. Zulvia Oktanida Syarif, Sp.KJ, said direct social interaction is still needed for mental health amidst the ease of interacting via the internet.

“The ease of interacting via the internet often makes direct social interaction forgotten, even though the two have different impacts,” said one of the central administrators of the Indonesian Psychiatric Association (PDSKJ), Friday (10/14).

The doctor who is familiarly called dr. Vivi explains that social media changes the way a person views themselves, body shape, achievements, and so on. Even though what is displayed on social media is not necessarily in accordance with what happens in the real world.

This increases a person’s tendency to compare themselves to what is seen as perfect on social media.

“Cyberbullying and cybercrime are also vulnerable at this time. Various things that have been mentioned above can affect a person’s mental health,” said the Psychiatrist Specialist at Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah Hospital.

To overcome these problems, she appealed to the public not to forget direct communication and social interaction and to limit themselves in accessing the internet and social media.

“Once in a while, try to do a social media detox or not use social media first to provide peace and improve mental health,” she said.

In addition to limiting the use of social media, other things that must be avoided in order to maintain mental health, namely negative thinking, irregular sleep patterns and low physical activity. Maintaining an active lifestyle is equally important for mental health. Regular exercise should be a part of everyday life, because exercise increases endorphins that cause feelings of happiness.

Dr. Vivi emphasized the importance of mental health, because there would be no physical health without mental health.

Individuals who are mentally healthy can develop physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially, so that a person is aware of their own abilities, can cope with pressure, can work productively, and is able to contribute to their community. [antaranews/photo special]
