THE MINISTER of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia (RI), Sandiaga Uno, met with the Secretary to the Director General of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Sylvie Forbin, to discuss the strengthening and development of the creative economy sector in Indonesia.
This meeting was held on the sidelines of the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Wednesday (10/2), 2024 local time. On the occasion, Sandiaga offered WIPO’s cooperation to strengthen the creative economy sector in Indonesia through the use of intellectual property (IP).
According to Sandiaga said the use of IP as a marketing medium for Indonesian creative economy products such as batik is very effective. This, Sandiaga said, is expected to further enhance the marketing of batik in the international market as an original Indonesian creative product.
“The use of this IP will have a huge impact on increasing international market awareness of batik. Of course, this awareness will be able to increase the demand for batik in the international market,” he said.
Sandiaga explained that Indonesia and WIPO have been working together to promote the country’s original IP. In 2023, with the support of WIPO, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, together with related stakeholders, initiated the “unBalivable” IP project, a collective movement involving 13 tourism stakeholders and 17 creative economy stakeholders.
On that occasion, Sandiaga also encouraged WIPO to make the WCCE an annual event. This is because many countries are enthusiastic about hosting the conference, which aims to strengthen this international creative economy sector.
“There are many countries that are enthusiastic about hosting the WCCE. So, my suggestion is that this event should be made an annual agenda that is routinely held in different countries and maybe later it can be held again in Indonesia,” he stated.
Responding to this, Sylvie Forbin as a representative of WIPO said that her party is ready to collaborate with Indonesia and the countries participating in WCCE to advance the international creative economy sector through the use of IP. “IP is important in the creative economy sector, therefore we support this collaboration initiative,” Sylvie concluded.
