AJI Pangeran Tumenggung (APT) Pranoto Airport in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, is entering the final stages of preparations to open international flight services. The first route is planned to begin operating in February 2026, meeting the high demand of East Kalimantan residents for international air transportation.
According to Murdoko, Head of the Technical and Operations Section of APT Pranoto Airport, said that all technical and managerial aspects are currently being expedited.
“APT Pranoto Airport is ready to operate direct international flights. We continue to take strategic steps, from strengthening cross-agency coordination to completing supporting facilities and infrastructure on the ground,” he said in Samarinda.
He added that in the preparation process, the airport prioritized the arrangement of a special terminal to separate the international departure and arrival areas.
Major adjustments were made to immigration posts, customs, and passenger flow to meet international flight safety and comfort standards.
“The partitioning of the waiting area and the completion of administrative documents have been completed. We are also adjusting the layout of the facilities to comply with international operational standards. We hope the public will not be surprised by the changes in the flow of traffic within the terminal,” Murdoko added.
Lion Air is confirmed to be the first to operate an international route from Samarinda, namely the Samarinda (AAP)-Kuala Lumpur (KUL) flight. Initially, the service will be available once a week to gauge market response. If demand continues to increase, the flight frequency will be gradually increased.
“Our target is to be operational in February, so that by the upcoming Eid al-Fitr period, this service can be fully utilized by the public,” he affirmed.
He further explained that in addition to ensuring technical readiness, airport management is also enhancing comfort facilities for prospective passengers.
To anticipate boredom due to delays, free game boxes and workspaces are being provided in the waiting area.
“This is part of our commitment to providing the best service amidst this airport transformation,” said Murdoko.
APT Pranoto Airport hopes for full support from the local government and the people of East Kalimantan. The presence of international flights is expected to strengthen Samarinda’s position as a key air transportation hub in Indonesia, particularly as a buffer zone for the Indonesian capital city (IKN).
With all preparations nearly complete, the opening of this international route is expected to provide new momentum for mobility, tourism, and economic growth in East Kalimantan. [Kompas.com/photo special]
