INDONESIAN travelers have adopted a new approach to enjoying their trips. Rather than focusing solely on low prices, they now prioritize comfort and high-quality experiences, ensuring that every rupiah spent delivers real value.
This trend is clearly reflected in data from Trip.com for the first half of 2026. The average expenditure per traveler for international trips saw double-digit year-on-year growth. Notably, bookings for business-class airfare on international routes nearly doubled.
This phenomenon serves as a strong indicator that travelers from Indonesia are willing to spend more to ensure a more comfortable journey. Modern travelers are increasingly opting for premium facilities and superior travel experiences.
According tot Krishna Arya, General Manager of Trip.com Indonesia, said highlights this shift in mindset. He notes that Indonesian travelers are becoming more strategic in allocating their travel budgets—whether by opting for higher-tier services, accounting for the total cost of flights and hotels, or leveraging specific features available on booking platforms.
“At Trip.com, we provide the choices, flexibility, and information travelers need to make the best decisions for their specific requirements—whether for a carefully planned vacation or a spontaneous weekend getaway,” he explains.
Given these dynamics, Trip.com outlines how travelers can enjoy the best possible holiday experience without excessive overspending, through a combination of flexibility, strategic timing, and thorough planning.
Time Flexibility: The Key to Uncompromised Comfort
A truly memorable trip begins with flexibility. By not being tied to a single date or a fixed destination, travelers open themselves up to the best possible travel experiences. Flexible search features on the Trip.com platform, for instance, make it easy for travelers to compare prices directly, helping them find options that best align with their preferences and budget.
This inclination toward seeking extra comfort is evidenced by a sharp rise in international business-class bookings during the first half of 2026. According to Trip.com data, international business-class bookings nearly doubled compared to the previous year—a growth rate that outpaced that of economy-class bookings.
For many travelers, the additional amenities and exclusive ambiance experienced during long-haul flights serve as a well-deserved “self-reward.” Travelers increasingly prioritize comfort, especially when embarking on long-distance journeys.
Beyond the choice of flight class, travelers are also becoming more deliberate in planning their departure timing. The lead time for booking international flight tickets has shifted earlier, moving from an average of 39 days to 41 days prior to departure. This extended timeframe provides travelers with the ideal space to carefully weigh their various options.
This approach is further bolstered by a proactive stance in monitoring price fluctuations. This is reflected in a 31% year-on-year (YoY) surge in new users for Trip.com’s “Price Alert” feature. Through real-time notifications, travelers can track fare changes for their desired routes and secure their bookings the moment the price reaches their ideal level.
In addition to greater flexibility regarding timing, a shift in trends is also evident in how travelers organize their trips. The practice of booking flights and accommodations separately is increasingly being replaced by an “all-in-one” planning approach.
Trip.com has recorded double-digit growth in bookings for “Flight + Hotel” packages. Beyond being more practical, this integrated approach has proven to be more economical, offering an average saving of 8% on hotel costs compared to booking components separately.
There is also a growing preference for high-end accommodations. Throughout 2026, approximately 50% of all international hotel bookings made by Indonesian travelers were for four- and five-star properties. This underscores that the aesthetics, amenities, and comfort of one’s lodging have become key pillars of the vacation experience.
According to data from Trip.com, flight-plus-hotel packages in 2026 remained dominated by routes such as Jakarta–Singapore, Jakarta–Bali, Jakarta–Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta–Bangkok, and Jakarta–Penang. Among these popular routes, the Jakarta–Penang connection emerged as a standout, recording a remarkable year-on-year growth of 234%.
Overall, travel trends in 2026 demonstrate that Indonesian travelers have evolved into “smart travelers.” They are not merely taking vacations; they are investing in the quality of their experiences, peace of mind, and a high standard of comfort. [sources/photo special]
