VISA announced the results of its Global Travel Intentions (GTI) Study, which spotlighted trends in tourism and travel in 2017, stretching across 15,000 respondents from more than 27 countries and territories.
According to President Director of PT. Visa Worldwide Indonesia Riko Abdurrahman said Visa’s GTI Study highlights how travelers have become increasingly familiar with technology to plan their trips and navigate their destinations – 83% of travelers used technology for this purpose in 2017 compared to 78% in 2015. Yet the majority of them are still decidedly analog, 77 percent still preferred to rely on cash when it comes to making payments internationally.
“Among the insights gleaned from the study: Indonesian travelers rely heavily on online information sources at every stage of travel, 91% while planning, 82% while booking, and 82% gained online access while overseas. The study further revealed that, within the next two years, the average number of international trips taken by Indonesian travelers is expected to rise to 5.4 trips, compared to the past two years with only 5.0 trips. Triggers for traveling include: family vacation during holidays and to get away from stress,” Riko said.
He also noted that the GTI study has revealed some very interesting travel insights, including how technology becomes integral at every stage of the Indonesian travelers’ journey. Traveling abroad has also become more common for Indonesian travelers thanks to technology that makes traveling abroad much easier and less expensive than before. Traveling is not uncommon today as people easily tap their mobile phones to do almost everything, from browsing popular destinations, booking hotels, purchasing flight tickets, to planning their travel itinerary.
Riko added that further, our study showed that Indonesian travelers prefer to travel with their families and friends as 30% of the respondents are planning their next trip to seek bonding with their loved ones.
Macro Trends 2018 in Travel
In addition to examining the motivation and planning tactics, the GTI Study of Indonesian travelers also uncovered a number of macro trends expected to continue into 2018: Mobile is an important source of online Information for Indonesians: (1). 79% of respondents accessed online travel information on mobile and 84 percent at destinations. (2). 97% of Indonesian travellers want to stay connected to the internet while travelling, which is the highest compared to APAC and Global travellers. (3). Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia are the most visited countries in the previous two years.(4). 81% Indonesians used cards for bookings which is the highest compared to their global peers. (5). While Indonesians are confident using cards at home and at the booking stage of their travel, less than half use cards for spending at their travel destination.
“As technology becomes integral in our everyday lives, we can expect more Indonesian travelers to rely on digital or mobile payment when planning, booking, and traveling to a foreign country. As our mobile and contactless payments have become increasingly popular all over the world, we hope to encourage Indonesian travelers to use payment cards, especially when they travel abroad,” said Riko.
