THE WORLD’s LARGEST CRUISE SHIP, ROYAL CARIBBEAN, STARTED ITS FIRST VOYAGE

THE LARGEST cruise ship in the world officially sailed on Saturday (1/26). The ship, which weighs 250,800 tons, five times the size of the Titanic starts its voyage from the Port of Miami.

Reported by AP News, Royal Carribean became a company that presents cruise ships spread in the world. This ship stretches nearly 365-meter from the bow to the stern. The cruise ship, named Royal Carribean Icon of the Seas, left South Florida to sail for seven days, to the Eastern Caribbean region.

“Icon of the Seas is the culmination of dreams, innovations, and realizing our mission for more than 50 years – to provide the world’s best vacation experience in a responsible way,” said the President and CEO of Royal Carribean Group, Jason Liberty, as quoted by AP News.

When it was first revealed to the public in October 2022, the ICON of the Seas ship received the largest order in one day, and became the highest volume order week in 53 years of Royal Caribbean history.

“The Icon of the Seas ship itself is divided into eight environments on 20 decks. This cruise ship is equipped with six water slides, seven swimming pools, ice skating arena, theater, and more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges,” he remarked.

Royal Carribean Icon of the Seas is now able to carry a maximum of up to 7,600 passengers, and 2,350 ships. In addition, this cruise ship is also supported by a delicious double fuel engine that can be powered by natural gas (LNG), an alternative fuel according to the International Cruise Line Association can reduce sulfur emissions and greenhouse gas.

However, some environmental observers are worried that LNG powered ships will increase methane emissions. There are also those who argue that tourists produce carbon eight times more on cruise ships, compared to land.

“Every kilowatt used in the ICON of the Seas is examined for energy efficiency and emission reduction,” said Royal Carribean, answering public concerns. [sources/special photo]
