THE MINISTRY of Tourism is collaborating with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law to improve the protection and utilization of intellectual property to support the development of the national tourism sector.
Representing Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Bayu Aji, stated that this collaboration provides an important foundation for both institutions in strengthening the protection and utilization of intellectual property, particularly geographical indications, in the tourism sector in accordance with statutory regulations.
Intellectual property protection, Bayu continued in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday, (07/4), 2026, is a crucial part of sustainable tourism management.
“We want the added value of regional products to be truly enjoyed by the community and business actors in tourist destinations, rather than being claimed or exploited by unauthorized parties,” said Bayu Aji.
The strengthening of this collaboration was marked by the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between the Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Bayu Aji, and the Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, at Graha Pengayoman, Jakarta, on Thursday (07/2,) 2026.
Through this agreement, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJIP) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights will provide facilitation, technical guidance, and assistance to the Ministry of Tourism in the process of protecting geographical indications for various superior products in tourism areas that exhibit regional characteristics and uniqueness.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism will provide data and information on the potential of the tourism sector that can be registered as geographical indications, while integrating intellectual property protection efforts into the development of tourism destinations and products.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen destination identity, increase the added value of local products, expand economic opportunities for the community, and maintain the authenticity and reputation of various superior regional products to strengthen their competitiveness in national and international markets.
The cooperation agreement is valid for five years from the date of signing and will be periodically evaluated annually by both parties to ensure its effective implementation and optimal benefits.
Bayu Aji hopes that the synergy between the Ministry of Tourism and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJIP) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights will be a strategic step in supporting tourism development that is not only oriented towards increasing tourist visits but also strengthening the local economy through the protection of regional intellectual assets.
“We hope this collaboration will be a sustainable step so that more unique products from Indonesian tourist destinations will receive strong legal protection and become more competitive in both domestic and international markets,” Bayu Aji concluded. [antaranews]
