MINISTRY PRESENTS RI’S SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AT THE UNWTO FORUM IN THE US

THE MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy complied with the UNWTO invitation in New York, United States, to deliver a keynote address on sustainable tourism entitled “High Level Thematic Debate: Putting Sustainable and resilient tourism at the heart of an inclusive recovery” on 4-5 May 2022.

According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno conveyed success stories and sharing best practices that Indonesia had carried out through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in an effort to restore the tourism sector and the creative economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“And the G20 Presidency in 2022 which makes Indonesia (RI) a reference and role model in efforts to develop sustainable tourism and creative economy, so that it can encourage UN member states, especially the G20, to actively participate in the Tourism Working Group and other multilateral forums,” he said.

In addition to delivering the keynote address, Minister Sandiaga Uno was also specially invited to take part in a high-level UN discussion on sustainable tourism. He will also seek to expand networks with UN officials and hold bilateral meetings with friendly countries.

“We fulfill the invitation from the President of the United Nations General Assembly who wants Indonesia’s active participation in economic revival, especially in the tourism and creative economy sectors, and ensures that Indonesian tourism is sustainable and focuses on quality tourism and the creative economy,” Sandiaga Uno stated, Wednesday (5/5). /4).

The concept of sustainable tourism must continue to be encouraged and in line with still paying attention to and maintaining the sustainability of the national ecosystem. In addition, sustainable tourism is also useful for absorbing a lot of workers so as to encourage the economy and improve the welfare of the surrounding community.

“This initiative is one of the collaborative efforts between industrial sector players and the government to increase the rise of tourism and a sustainable creative economy,” Sandiaga remarked.

One of the steps taken by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in supporting sustainable tourism is through a community-based tourism village development program and an equitable economy for every level of society. This is in accordance with the strategic plan of the world tourism organization (UNWTO) in an effort to restore quality tourism for the welfare of the community.

“In addition, we will also explain Indonesia’s position which will firmly invite Russia and we will add Ukraine to the first tourism working group according to the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia who is part of the G20,” he explained.

He added that it is Indonesia’s role that we hope will open up more opportunities for economic revival, opening up business and job opportunities, especially community-based tourism such as tourist villages, MSME empowerment programs and digitization. [traveltext.id]
