FIND OUT WHAT ‘POST HOLIDAY BLUES’ IS AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

THE LEBARAN holiday is a moment that most Indonesians look forward to, however, there are times when after a vacation there is a disorder called post holiday blues.

What is post holiday blues? Clinical psychologist and co-founder of Ohana Space Veronica Adesla, M.Psi, explained that post holiday blues is an unpleasant negative feeling after a vacation. The negative feelings that arise can be sadness, loneliness, anxiety, fatigue, disappointment, or lack of enthusiasm when having to return to the usual routine.

“Usually, these feelings are temporary, lasting for a few days after a long vacation,” says Veronica.

As a result of post holiday blues, a person can feel anxious when imagining having to return to a routine, lack of enthusiasm, lack of focus, and not optimal in carrying out daily activities.

However, clinical psychologist from Ohana Space Annisa Mega Radyani, M.Psi. explains that post holiday blues is not a dangerous psychological disorder. In fact, sometimes post holiday blues is quite normal for many people to experience after a vacation.

“During a vacation, there may be intense pleasant emotions. These activities activate hormones in the body, such as serotonin or dopamine, which make the body feel comfortable and relaxed,” says Annisa.

When these activities stop because you have to go back to your usual routine, these hormones may decrease and can cause negative emotions and discomfort after the vacation.

Annisa said that so far, post holiday blues does not have a specific severity or level. Post holiday blues can be considered normal if felt for one or two weeks after vacation.

However, if post holiday blues occurs for more than two weeks, it is likely that it is quite severe and can lead to other psychological problems.

How to deal with post holiday blues, after knowing the symptoms and causes of post holiday blues, it is better to deal with the disorder immediately. According to Annisa, if someone has started to feel negative feelings after a vacation, admit that they are experiencing post holiday blues.

“Secondly, it’s good to provide time too. So, start adjusting our condition again. Maybe in the first week back to work, we don’t need to make a lot of big targets,” said Annisa.

Annisa suggests making a to do list or a list of small plans with a small deadline or as much as possible because the most important thing is that the plan is completed. Instead of making big plans right away, start with the light ones first.

In addition, make sure you get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise because a healthy lifestyle also affects the body’s hormones. Hormones are closely related to post holiday blues, so it’s important to keep your body in good condition.

“Next, keep in touch with the people you met on vacation. Just chat a little, keep in touch slowly with people who make us comfortable,” Annisa added.

In addition to the methods above, Veronica also added that overcoming post holiday blues can be done by setting a schedule and making plans for the next vacation agenda. Set a schedule to try something new and fun to do. [antaranews]
