CREATIVE Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya emphasized that architecture is not limited to aesthetics, but also serves as a vital component of disaster mitigation and national resilience.
“Architecture is evolving from the art of design into the science of survival. Through design innovation, architects can transform hazards into manageable risks,” he said in a statement received on Saturday.
The Ministry of Creative Economy reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of architecture as a strategic subsector of the creative economy, contributing to economic resilience and disaster mitigation.
This commitment was underscored by the minister’s participation in the International Disaster Resilience Workshop & Conference 2026, themed “Architecture: Disaster Risk Reduction, Resilience & Recovery (DR3),” held in Banda Aceh on Friday (04/17), 2026.
The international forum addresses strategic issues related to the role of design in mitigating natural disaster risks and managing post-disaster reconstruction.
Harsya said the government’s presence at the forum reflects its commitment to fostering innovation and high-quality architectural work as part of the national creative economy.
According to him, the architecture subsector generated 61,442 jobs and contributed more than 2.1 billion U.S. dollars to gross domestic product, with total investment reaching around 22 million U.S. dollars in 2024.
He noted that these figures highlight the significant role of Indonesian architects in driving the national economy.
The minister also underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in strengthening the creative economy ecosystem, including partnerships with the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI).
The conference, held from April 17 to 19, marks the first agenda of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) in Indonesia since the organization was established in 1948.
Banda Aceh was selected as the host city without a bidding process, based on its recognition as a global example of resilience and post-disaster reconstruction. [traveltext.id]
